About Afriski Mountain Resort
Afriski Mountain Resort is Africa's only functioning ski resort, a remarkable and genuinely unique destination at 2,975m in the Maluti Mountains of Lesotho — the landlocked mountain kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa — that offers 8km of groomed piste and a dedicated snowpark served by four lifts. The ski area is modest by any international standard, and the terrain suits beginners and novice intermediates rather than serious skiers; what Afriski offers that no other resort on earth can match is the singular experience of skiing on the African continent, surrounded by the high grasslands and rondavel villages of a mountain kingdom where horses and herdsmen outnumber tourists. The resort draws primarily a South African market from Johannesburg and Cape Town — for many South Africans, a day at Afriski represents their only encounter with snow — but US travelers combining it with a southern African wildlife safari will find it an extraordinary detour. Access from Maseru Airport is approximately two hours through dramatic mountain passes on roads that require a 4WD vehicle in winter conditions.
