About Auli Ski Resort
Auli is India's most established ski resort, a government-operated ski area in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand perched at 2,519m in the Garhwal Himalayas with views across a 300km panorama of snow peaks including Nanda Devi, India's second-highest mountain. Its 10km of groomed slopes served by a ropeway and five surface lifts offer intermediate skiing in spectacular high-altitude surroundings, with the added drama of a ski area that sits within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of extraordinary natural beauty. Snowfall in the Garhwal Himalaya is reliable from January through February, with the best conditions typically concentrated in a six-week window that rewards well-timed visits. Infrastructure is basic by international standards — accommodation is predominantly in government-run guesthouses and a few private hotels in the nearby town of Joshimath, accessible via an aerial ropeway from the valley — but Auli's remarkable mountain setting and low costs make it an authentic and rewarding destination for adventurous US travelers already visiting northern India or on dedicated ski-trekking itineraries in the Himalayan foothills.
