About Gulmarg Ski Resort

Gulmarg is one of the world's most dramatic and improbable ski destinations, a high-altitude meadow in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas just 60km from Srinagar that has emerged over the past two decades as a serious destination for expert and off-piste skiers seeking deep, dry Himalayan powder at a fraction of the cost of established Alpine or North American resorts. The two-stage Gulmarg Gondola — one of the world's highest cable cars — ascends 1,550 vertical metres from the village at 2,650m to Apharwat Peak at 4,200m, depositing skiers into vast open snowfields and couloirs that receive genuinely exceptional snowfall from winter storms tracking up the Jhelum Valley from the Arabian Sea. Groomed piste infrastructure is limited — 8km of marked trails served by the gondola and a handful of surface lifts — but the off-piste terrain is effectively limitless and largely untracked even on busy weekends. Gulmarg requires careful travel planning given its location in a politically sensitive region; the resort functions smoothly during the winter season and local heli-ski and freeride operations have established safe, professional standards for visiting international skiers.
