About Kopaonik
Kopaonik is the largest and best-equipped ski resort in the western Balkans, a compact but surprisingly modern mountain in southern Serbia that sits on the plateau of the Kopaonik massif at 1,700m and offers 55km of groomed piste across 25 trails served by 24 lifts — infrastructure that puts many better-known European resorts to shame at a price point significantly below anything in the Alps. The ski area's concentration on the sheltered southern slopes of the Kopaonik plateau delivers consistent snow coverage from December through March, with the resort's own snowmaking network providing backup during lean winters; altitude helps too, with the summit at 2,017m generating the lower temperatures that preserve natural snow better than most Balkan alternatives. The resort village of Kopaonik Town at the base has developed rapidly over the past decade, with modern hotels, good restaurants, lively après-ski bars, and a pedestrianised main street that creates a genuinely enjoyable mountain atmosphere far removed from the post-communist bleakness that characterised Serbian tourism a generation ago. For US travelers exploring the Balkans — or simply seeking excellent skiing at European resort prices without Alpine resort price tags — Kopaonik offers outstanding value.
