About Mt Hutt
Mt Hutt is New Zealand's premier South Island ski resort outside Queenstown, a striking mountain in the Southern Alps above the Canterbury Plains that consistently delivers the longest and most reliable season of any resort in the country — opening as early as late May in good snow years and running deep into October on its shadowed south-facing slopes. Its 55km of terrain spread across 365 hectares of ski area spans the full ability range, from wide groomed beginner runs near the base facility to challenging black diamond terrain on the upper faces and extensive off-piste bowls accessible to confident backcountry-equipped intermediates. Mt Hutt's exposed alpine position at the spine of the Southern Alps means weather can be severe — wind closures are more frequent here than at sheltered valley resorts — but on clear days the views across the Canterbury Plains to the Pacific Ocean are extraordinary, and the resort's snow quality on those days is outstanding. The nearest town of Methven, 25km from the mountain, has developed a good selection of lodge accommodation, restaurants, and adventure tourism operators over the past decade, making it a viable base for a week-long ski holiday combining Mt Hutt with the nearby resorts of Porters and Temple Basin.
