About Oukaimeden
Oukaimeden is Africa's highest ski resort and one of skiing's most improbable destinations, a Berber mountain village at 2,600m in the High Atlas range just 75km south of Marrakech that offers 20km of ski terrain and the entirely surreal experience of skiing within sight of the Sahara. Its seven lifts — a mixture of drag tows and a single chairlift installed in the Soviet era by Moroccan mountain clubs — serve slopes that range from broad beginner fields at the base to the steeper summit terrain at 3,268m, with conditions that depend heavily on whether winter Atlantic depressions track far enough south to deposit snow on the Atlas rather than dissipating over the Iberian Peninsula. Snow conditions are unpredictable and the season varies enormously from year to year; in good winters the resort holds reliable cover from December through March, in poor winters skiing may be limited to a few weeks. The cultural experience surrounding Oukaimeden is arguably the main draw for international visitors: Berber shepherds with flocks at the base, the extraordinary drive through the Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, and the immediate contrast with Marrakech's medina below create a juxtaposition of ancient mountain cultures and modern winter sport found nowhere else on earth.
