About Sugarloaf

Sugarloaf is the largest ski resort in Maine and the only one in the eastern United States with above-treeline skiing — a sprawling snowfield near the 4,237-foot summit that opens to unobstructed views of the Maine wilderness when conditions permit. Its 1,240 skiable acres include some of the steepest sustained terrain in New England, particularly in the Snowfields and on the double-black-diamond trails of the Front Face, which require genuine ability and commitment in the variable icy-to-heavy eastern conditions. The resort is intentionally remote — two hours from Portland — which keeps it free of the weekend crowds that compress the more accessible Vermont resorts, and the compact village at the base has a genuine community character built by the generations of dedicated skiers who make the journey specifically for Sugarloaf's unique combination of vertical, scale, and isolation.
