About Sun Valley

Sun Valley holds a unique place in American ski history as the country's first purpose-built destination ski resort, opened in 1936 by the Union Pacific Railroad with the world's first chairlift on Dollar Mountain. Bald Mountain — "Baldy" — remains its centrepiece: a single peak offering 3,400 vertical feet of consistently excellent terrain, with wide, well-groomed intermediate runs on the lower mountain and a series of challenging ridge trails and bowls near the summit that have attracted serious skiers for nine decades. The Sun Valley resort village, built around the original 1936 Sun Valley Lodge, maintains an understated elegance — think Hemingway's preferred retreat rather than glitzy Colorado resort town — that appeals to visitors who appreciate quality and heritage over spectacle. Its 15-minute transfer from Friedman Memorial Airport makes it one of the most easily accessed destination resorts in the American West.
