About Tūroa

Tūroa is the sister resort to Whakapapa on Mount Ruapehu's southwestern face, sharing the same volcanic peak but offering a distinctly different skiing character — the terrain here is generally steeper, more open, and the mountain's aspect delivers better snow preservation through the season. Its 45km of piste across seven lifts includes New Zealand's longest vertical descent (722m) and some of the country's most challenging in-bounds terrain, particularly the High Noon Express zone where wide, ungroomed faces invite confident intermediate and advanced skiers to pick their line. The Parklane terrain park is one of the best freestyle facilities in the Southern Hemisphere. Tūroa's base is accessed from the town of Ohakune, known as New Zealand's carrot capital and offering a small but characterful collection of restaurants, bars, and accommodation that gives it more of a resort-town feel than Whakapapa's more remote access. For US skiers visiting during the Northern Hemisphere summer, combining both Ruapehu resorts — accessible on a shared lift pass — with a North Island road trip through Tongariro National Park creates a genuinely unforgettable adventure.
