About Whiteface Mountain

Whiteface Mountain is the official Olympic venue for alpine skiing in the United States — having hosted events at both the 1932 and 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics — and its 3,430-foot vertical drop is the greatest of any ski resort in eastern North America, a distinction that sets it apart from every other mountain in New England and New York. The terrain is genuinely demanding by eastern standards, with long sustained pitches on the Face and Slides that reward skilled skiers, and conditions on the exposed upper mountain can be brutally cold and icy in winter, requiring a different kind of technique than the powder-oriented western resorts. The town of Lake Placid at the base is one of the most historically rich ski destinations in American skiing, and the Olympic Museum and bobsled track provide compelling off-slope attractions for families.
