About Zakopane — Kasprowy Wierch

Zakopane is Poland's ski capital and the Tatra Mountains' most important resort town, a sprawling mountain community at 750m in the southern Carpathians that has served as the winter playground of Krakow, Warsaw, and the entire Polish nation for over a century. The principal ski terrain radiates from two main areas — the Kasprowy Wierch cable car system, which ascends 979 vertical metres to the Polish-Slovak border ridge at 1,985m and accesses the country's most challenging on-piste and off-piste terrain, and the more modest Gubałówka and Nosal ski areas within the town that serve the beginner and intermediate market. Kasprowy Wierch's summit position on the main Tatra divide delivers reliable snowfall and the longest season of any Polish resort, with the upper couloirs on the Hala Gąsienicowa and Goryczkowa faces offering genuine expert terrain with a distinctive Carpathian character quite different from the manicured pistes of Western Europe. The town of Zakopane itself is a major draw independent of the skiing: its traditional Góral highland architecture, exceptional smoked cheese markets, thermal spa bathing at Chochołów, and vibrant folk music scene create a cultural richness that makes it one of Central Europe's most compelling winter destinations for US travelers.
