About CairnGorm Mountain
CairnGorm Mountain is the highest ski area in the United Kingdom, a wind-scoured plateau in the Cairngorms National Park of the Scottish Highlands that has provided some of Britain's most challenging and unpredictable skiing since the first tow was installed in 1961. Its 30km of marked terrain across 36 trails ranges from gentle learning slopes at the Day Lodge to steep, mogul-heavy black runs on the upper mountain, with the iconic Ptarmigan at 1,097m — the highest ski station in the UK — delivering views across the Spey Valley on the rare clear days that the notoriously volatile Highland weather permits. The mountain's exposure on the eastern flank of the Cairngorm plateau means conditions can shift from spring sunshine to Arctic blizzard within hours, a feature that has produced a generation of technically proficient British skiers well-prepared for any conditions Europe might offer. For US visitors, CairnGorm is less a conventional ski holiday destination than a cultural and geographical experience — a chance to ski the same remote Highland terrain where Victorian naturalists, wartime mountaineers, and the royal family at nearby Balmoral have walked for generations — combined with excellent whisky distillery touring along Speyside.
